A 41-year-old Indian-origin man has been handed a 25-year prison sentence for the brutal murder of a 24-year-old woman on a remote Australian beach. Former nurse Rajwinder Singh was found guilty of killing Toyah Cordingley in 2018 while she walked her dog at Wangetti Beach, north of Cairns. Singh's motive remains unknown, described by the judge as an 'opportunistic killing'. The crime sent shockwaves through the community, with Cordingley being a respected local who volunteered at an animal refuge and worked at a health food store. In a disturbing twist, Singh abandoned his family in Australia, including his wife and children, to flee to India after the murder. 'You left without even saying goodbye to your loved ones, showing only concern for your own escape,' Justice Lincoln Crowley said in court. Singh was extradited from India two years ago after a AUD 1 million reward was posted for information leading to his capture. He will have to serve at least 25 years behind bars before being eligible for parole. The sentence marks a somber end to a case that has haunted the small community for years.
