The brother of slain Bangladeshi student leader Sharif Osman Hadi has accused the country's interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, of orchestrating his murder to derail the upcoming national election. Osman Hadi, a key figure in the student-led uprising that forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign in August 2024, was shot while exiting a mosque in Dhaka and died days later in Singapore.
Omar Hadi, Osman's brother, made the allegations during a speech in Dhaka, warning the government that if they fail to bring the killers to justice, they will suffer a similar fate as Hasina, who is currently in exile in India.
Osman Hadi was a candidate in the scheduled February 12 general election and had been a vocal critic of the government. His brother claimed that he was killed because he refused to bow down to any agency or foreign master.
The assassination sparked widespread outrage in Bangladesh, with hundreds taking to the streets and resorting to violence. A Hindu worker, Dipu Chandra Das, was lynched by a mob and set on fire in the aftermath of Osman Hadi's death.
The government has been criticized for its handling of the situation, with Omar Hadi warning that the lack of progress in bringing the killers to justice will have severe consequences. 'Ensure the trial of the killers quickly so that the election environment is not hindered,' he said. 'If justice for Osman Hadi is not served, you too will be compelled to flee Bangladesh one day.'
