A hero's reward: Ahmed Al Ahmed, the 43-year-old man who selflessly tackled a gunman at Bondi Beach, has been handed a $2.5 million cheque in community donations as he recovers in hospital.
The father of two, who disarmed one of the shooters and saved countless lives during the deadly attack last week, received the generous gift from his hospital bed on Friday.
Ahmed's bravery was hailed by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who described him as 'the best of our country' after visiting him in the hospital this week. The Prime Minister's praise was echoed by world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, who praised Ahmed's 'very, very brave' actions.
However, Ahmed's road to recovery has been fraught with challenges. His migration lawyer, Issa, revealed that the hero may lose an arm due to the five bullets he sustained in his left arm, and one bullet that hit him in the back. Despite the pain, Ahmed has shown no regret for his actions, saying he would do it all again.
The attack on Bondi Beach, which occurred on December 7, left 15 people dead and several others injured. Two gunmen, Sajid Akram and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram, opened fire on a crowd gathered for the Jewish festival Hannukah celebrations. While Sajid was killed in a face-off with police, Naveed was critically injured and later arrested at his hospital bed.
Ahmed's selfless act has inspired a global outpouring of support, with the community coming together to show their gratitude for his bravery. As he continues his recovery, Ahmed remains an inspiration to us all, a true hero who put the lives of others before his own.
