A 24-year-old gunman, Naveed Akram, who was part of a father-son duo responsible for the deadly Bondi Beach shooting, has regained consciousness after being in a coma. This development comes as the first funeral of the victims took place in Sydney, with Rabbi Eli Schlanger, a 41-year-old father of five, being laid to rest in a packed synagogue service.
The investigation into the pair's background and potential links to terrorism groups continues, with police revealing that they had found homemade Islamic State flags in a vehicle registered to one of the gunmen. The two men had also traveled to the Philippines last month, where Islamic State-aligned groups have operated.
Naveed Akram was previously investigated by Australia's domestic intelligence agency in 2019 due to his connections with a Sydney-based Islamic State terrorism cell and his association with radical cleric Wisam Haddad. The father, Sajid Akram, had recently obtained a gun license in 2023, despite initial reports suggesting it was issued in 2015.
As the community mourns the loss of 15 lives, a memorial has formed on the patch of grass near the attack site, with donations pouring in for the victims' families. A gofundme page for Ahmed Al Ahmed, the 43-year-old father who tackled and disarmed one of the shooters, has raised over $2.4 million.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed that the attack was inspired by ISIS ideology, and the investigation into the pair's motivations continues. The crime scene is expected to be reopened to the public on Wednesday afternoon, allowing people to pay their respects to the victims.
