A dramatic twist unfolded in the investigation into the Brown University shooting as authorities announced the release of a person of interest detained in connection with the deadly attack. The decision came after investigators discovered new leads, sending the probe in a 'different direction'. The release of the individual, taken into custody over 12 hours ago, has sparked concerns that the actual perpetrator may still be at large. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley acknowledged the fresh anxiety this news may bring to the community. The shooting occurred on Saturday afternoon during final exams, leaving nine people injured and two students dead. A gunman opened fire inside a classroom in the Barus & Holley building, firing over 40 rounds from a 9mm handgun. Two firearms, including one equipped with a laser sight, and two loaded magazines were later recovered. In response to the shooting, Brown University has canceled all remaining classes, exams, and projects for the semester, allowing students to leave campus. University President Christina Paxson expressed her gratitude for the students' resilience and support for one another. Of the nine injured, one student has been released from the hospital, while seven others remain in critical but stable condition, and one is in critical condition. Durham Academy, a private school in North Carolina, confirmed that a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was among the wounded and remains critically injured. Attorney General Peter Neronha explained the shift in the investigation, saying it's not uncommon for investigators to regroup and change direction. Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez declined to comment on the detained individual's connection to Brown University, citing the ongoing investigation.
