A manhunt that gripped the nation for six days came to an end on December 19, when 48-year-old Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, a Portuguese national and Brown University student, took his own life in Salem, New Hampshire. The suspect was the prime suspect in the Brown University shooting that left two people dead. He was also linked to the murder of MIT Professor Nuno Loureiro. According to Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha, two guns were found at the scene where Valente's body was discovered. The investigation revealed that Valente had been using a rental car and had taken measures to evade detection, including swapping out license plates. Valente's last known address was in Miami, and he had been accused of interstate murder. However, with his death, there will be no prosecution. Authorities had been tracking the suspect for days, following a lead from a rental car location in Massachusetts, which led them to a storage facility in New Hampshire. In a statement, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley expressed relief that the manhunt had come to an end and praised the people of Providence for coming together during the difficult time. The investigation into the Brown University shooting is ongoing, with federal officials confirming the death of the suspect, who had been linked to the murders of two prominent academics.
