Federal investigators in Washington D.C. have cracked the case of a suspected pipe bomb on the eve of the January 6, 2021, Capitol Hill riots. The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Brian Cole Jr from Woodbridge, Virginia, was tracked down through a combination of surveillance footage and digital evidence.
According to the US Department of Justice, the breakthrough came when investigators analyzed surveillance footage showing a man planting the bombs. A distinctive pair of Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes, worn by Cole Jr, proved to be a key piece of evidence. The FBI released images of the suspect, including his shoes, in a public appeal for help identifying him.
However, the investigation didn't stop there. Further analysis revealed that Cole Jr's Nissan Sentra was spotted driving past a license plate reader near the crime scene, while his mobile phone communicated with cell towers near the Republican and Democratic National Committee buildings on the evening of January 5, 2021.
Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that Cole Jr will face charges related to the use of an explosive device. The investigation is ongoing.
Details of the case have sparked controversy, with Cole Jr's mother facing online backlash for her alleged comments about her son's intentions.
