Florida Man Executed for Brutal 1989 Murder of Mother of Two, Bringing Closure to Decades-Long Case
Mark Allen Geralds, 58, died by lethal injection at Florida State Prison for the 1989 murder of 33-year-old mother Tressa Pettibone.
Florida has executed Mark Allen Geralds, a 58-year-old man convicted of the 1989 killing of 33-year-old Tressa Lynn Pettibone. The execution, carried out by lethal injection at Florida State Prison on Tuesday at 6:15 pm ET, marked the 18th death sentence this year in Florida - the highest annual total under Governor Ron DeSantis' warrants.
The case, which gripped Panama City with its brutality and impact, had been making its way through the courts for nearly 37 years. Pettibone's family, who followed the case through decades of appeals, said it brought a measure of relief and closure.
The brutal murder occurred on February 1, 1989, when Geralds, then 22, attacked Pettibone in her home. Her 8-year-old son found her beaten, tied up, gagged, and fatally stabbed on the kitchen floor after returning home from school.
Court records describe an ordeal lasting roughly 20 minutes, with prosecutor Jim Appleman calling the attack 'outrageous' and one of the most horrific in the region. Investigators linked Geralds to the crime after he pawned jewelry matching items stolen from the home that same afternoon.
The evidence against Geralds was substantial, including plastic ties used to bind Pettibone that matched ones found in his car. Notably, Geralds had previously worked on a remodeling project at Pettibone's home and had even interacted with her and her children at a mall just a week before the murder, asking her son questions about their daily routine.
Prosecutors said Geralds had planned the robbery to steal $7,000 he believed was in the house. Pettibone died from blood loss after a prolonged beating.
Geralds was convicted in 1990 of first-degree murder, armed robbery, and related charges. The Florida Supreme Court later overturned his initial death sentence but upheld the conviction; he was re-sentenced to death in 1992.
In a bizarre twist, Geralds briefly made headlines before his trial for escaping from the Bay County Jail with four other inmates. His wife had smuggled in saw blades that were used to cut through the bars, and the group climbed out of a sixth-floor window using a rope made of bedsheets before being captured within hours.
In the final weeks before his execution, Geralds declined to pursue further appeals, requested no last meal, had no visitors or spiritual adviser, and chose to face the consequences of his actions.
