Gaza has been reeling from torrential rains that have left at least 12 people dead, including a two-week-old baby, and thousands of displaced Palestinians struggling to survive in makeshift tents. The downpour, which dumped over 150 milliliters of rain in some areas, has flooded camps, collapsed damaged buildings, and exposed the dire need for adequate shelter and aid in the war-torn territory. The Gaza Health Ministry reported that the two-week-old baby died from hypothermia after being transferred to intensive care, while a man was killed in Gaza City when a damaged building collapsed due to heavy rainfall. Five others were injured in the incident. Emergency workers are warning people to avoid congregating in damaged buildings, but with over 80% of buildings destroyed or damaged, there are few safe places to escape the rain. Mohammed Gharableh, a displaced father from Rafah, said that every storm brings new challenges, including finding shelter, mattresses, and blankets to keep his children safe and warm. Despite a two-month ceasefire, aid groups say not enough shelter material has been allowed into Gaza to help Palestinians cope with the winter. Israeli military figures suggest that Israel has failed to meet its commitment to allow 600 trucks of aid into Gaza daily, although Israel disputes these findings. The vast majority of Gaza's 2 million people have been displaced, living in overcrowded tent camps or makeshift shelters. The lack of proper infrastructure, including flooding and sanitation systems, has made conditions even more dire. Aid groups, including Shelter Cluster, have disputed Israeli claims of adequate aid delivery, saying that more winter items, shelter equipment, and sanitation supplies are desperately needed. With thousands of people struggling to survive in the ruins of Gaza, international aid and attention are crucial to addressing the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the territory.
