Germany's Merz Hints at Western Troops Repelling Russian Forces Under Ukraine Guarantees

BERLIN: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has revealed that Western troops could potentially repel Russian forces in Ukraine, under a post-ceasefire agreement backed by the US and Europe. However, Merz emphasized that this scenario remains a distant prospect. He made these comments during an interview with ZDF public television, where he was pressed for details on the security guarantees floated by the US in recent talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. According to Merz, the guarantors would be required to intervene if there's a violation of any ceasefire terms, securing a demilitarized zone and taking action against Russian incursions and attacks. Merz praised the US for adopting a 'remarkable new position' by committing to protect Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire, similar to NATO territory. Russia has yet to agree to the proposed ceasefire, which is a prerequisite for any security guarantees, or the presence of Western troops in Ukraine to help end the ongoing conflict. Merz also expressed optimism about securing a European agreement to use immobilized Russian assets to fund Ukraine's defense, citing a '50:50' chance of success. He emphasized the importance of this funding, as Ukraine will need support for at least two more years after the current European funding runs out in 2026. Merz acknowledged the reservations within Europe but urged action to halt the Russian army's advance, warning that inaction would lead to further consequences. When asked about the US's recent National Security Strategy, which has taken a more isolationist tone, Merz expressed skepticism that this stance would be sustained, citing the economic benefits of cooperation between the US and Europe.
