In a significant development, India and Canada have rekindled their intelligence sharing and cooperation, signaling a renewed commitment to strengthening their security ties. The move comes after a recent meeting between India's High Commissioner to Ottawa, Dinesh Patnaik, and Canada's Minister of Public Safety, Gary Anandasangaree.
The two countries have been working to rebuild trust, which had been strained following a diplomatic row sparked by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's comments on a potential link between Indian agents and the killing of pro-Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India had vehemently denied the allegations, describing them as 'absurd' and 'motivated.'
The ongoing security dialogue between the two nations is led by their National Security Advisors, with Canada's National Security and Intelligence Advisor, Nathalie G Drouin, meeting with her Indian counterpart, Ajit Doval, in September. Drouin acknowledged the 'common understanding and common goal' shared by the two countries, with a focus on enhancing security and law enforcement cooperation.
The dialogue encompasses a broad agenda, including information on gangs, terrorist links, and the movement of weapons and drugs. Regular conversations are aimed at rebuilding trust and exploring new avenues for collaboration. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) are also engaging in virtual discussions to enhance interoperability and coordination.
Canadian law enforcement remains concerned about the surge in violent incidents linked to extortion, often attributed to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Recent cases, such as the shooting in Surrey, British Columbia, have highlighted the need for intensified cooperation between the two countries.
As India and Canada work to strengthen their security ties, the revival of intelligence sharing marks a significant step forward. By addressing shared concerns and rebuilding trust, the two nations can better combat common threats and create safer streets for their citizens.
