A driver who plowed his minivan into a crowd of Liverpool soccer fans celebrating their Premier League championship, injuring over 130 people, has been sentenced to more than 21 years in prison. On May 26, Paul Doyle, 54, drove his vehicle into a sea of fans, causing chaos and destruction. The incident, which lasted just two minutes, left a trail of devastation, with victims ranging from a 6-month-old baby to a 77-year-old woman. Prosecutors described Doyle's actions as a 'man in a rage,' driven by anger and frustration. Doyle had pleaded guilty to 31 counts, including dangerous driving and multiple counts of attempting or causing grievous bodily harm. During the sentencing, graphic video footage and emotional statements from victims were presented, detailing the trauma and suffering inflicted by Doyle's actions. The court heard that Doyle had cursed at people in the street, blared his horn, and continued to hold his foot on the accelerator even after the vehicle came to a halt. A bystander, Daniel Barr, who acted instinctively and stopped the vehicle, was rewarded with the High Sheriff's Award for Bravery for his 'exceptional courage.' Barr, an army veteran and construction worker, downplayed his heroics, saying he did what many others attempted to do. The victims, who included a 16-year-old boy who lost his apprenticeship due to nightmares and a 23-year-old man who had to learn how to walk again, spoke of the lasting impact of the incident. The judge rejected Doyle's 'panic' defense, stating that it was 'demonstrably untrue.' Doyle's defense lawyer acknowledged his troubled past but argued that he had turned his life around and was remorseful for his actions. The judge, however, sentenced Doyle to over 21 years in prison, citing the severity of his crimes and the devastating impact on the victims.
