Lutsen Lodge Owner Bryce Campbell Charged in $14M Arson Scheme
Minnesota authorities have arrested and charged Lutsen Lodge owner, Bryce Campbell, nearly two years after the historic fire destroyed the 139-year-old resort.
The Minnesota authorities have arrested and charged Bryce Campbell, the 41-year-old owner of the historic Lutsen Lodge, with arson and insurance fraud. The charges stem from a devastating fire that destroyed the main building of the resort on February 6, 2024.
Campbell, who bought the lodge in 2018, was reportedly facing significant financial difficulties at the time of the blaze. Investigators found conversations on his phone and Facebook accounts joking about setting the resort on fire, including a message where he responded 'just burn it' to a friend discussing financial troubles just days before the incident.
Surveillance footage and phone records placed Campbell near the resort on the night of the fire. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), State Fire Marshal, and Cook County Attorney's Office conducted a thorough investigation involving forensic analysis, review of financial records, and interviews.
The lodge had passed a fire-safety inspection in July 2023, but several unresolved issues were raised, including concerns about sprinkler systems and fire-alarm documentation. The fire broke out shortly after midnight, consuming the entire wooden building with no guests present and no casualties.
The future of the Lutsen Lodge Property and its ownership remains uncertain. The resort was under significant financial strain, with past-due and near-due obligations totaling over $14 million at the time of the incident. Campbell's insurance coverage had allegedly been significantly improved before the tragedy.
