Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak will learn his fate on Friday as he faces judgment in a high-profile trial over his alleged involvement in the 1MDB graft scandal. A guilty verdict could add years to his existing six-year sentence, already being served for a previous conviction related to the same case. The 72-year-old Najib faces four counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering, linked to the plunder of hundreds of millions of dollars from Malaysia's 1MDB sovereign wealth fund. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison for each count of abuse of power. Prosecutors have presented a wealth of evidence, including bank records, witness testimony, and documentary evidence, to prove that Najib abused his position as prime minister, finance minister, and 1MDB advisory board chairman to move large sums of money to his personal accounts. The prosecution has accused Najib of being the 'single most powerful decision-maker' behind the scheme, which involved the transfer of billions of ringgit to his accounts. Najib's lawyers, however, have maintained that the money was donated from the Middle East and that the politician was unaware of the illegal transfers. They have also blamed Najib's close associate, fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, for the scandal. A guilty verdict would not only impact Najib's personal freedom but also his lingering influence within Malaysia's oldest political party, the United Malays National Organisation. The party was ousted from power in 2018, and a conviction could further erode Najib's reputation and influence.
