Nancy Mace Proposes Renaming BLM Plaza to Honor Charlie Kirk's Legacy
Rep. Nancy Mace has revealed that a bill has been introduced to rename the Black Lives Matter Plaza to “Charlie Kirk Freedom of Speech Plaza.”
US Representative Nancy Mace has introduced a bill to rename the Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington, D.C. to 'Charlie Kirk Freedom of Speech Plaza' in honor of the late Turning Point USA founder. Mace shared a video of Kirk visiting the plaza before his death, where he expressed his opposition to the 'mass race hysteria' and called for the removal of the Black Lives Matter Plaza.
In the video, Kirk is seen near the site where crews were removing a two-block-long mural of the Black Lives Matter Plaza. He is heard saying, 'Make America Great Again, getting rid of BLM Plaza.' Mace captioned the video, 'Prior to his death, Charlie Kirk himself visited BLM plaza and called for an end to what he termed "mass race hysteria," stating "Make America Great Again, get rid of Black Lives Matter Plaza." We introduced a bill to rename it the "Charlie Kirk Freedom of Speech Plaza.” This is for you, Charlie. No one deserves it more.'
The Black Lives Matter Plaza was renamed in 2020 after a series of protests following George Floyd's death. The plaza was removed in March 2025 as part of policies against diversity, equity, and inclusion enforced by the Trump administration. Plans to redesign the area and honor its legacy have continued.
The bill comes months after Charlie Kirk's death, which occurred on September 10 during an appearance at a campus event in Utah. Kirk was allegedly shot dead by Tyler Robinson, and the FBI is investigating groups that may have aided and abetted the murder.
The renaming of the plaza has sparked debate, with some arguing that it will honor Kirk's legacy and promote free speech, while others may see it as an attempt to erase the history and significance of the Black Lives Matter movement.
