A devastating plane crash at Statesville Regional Airport on December 18 resulted in the loss of seven lives, including retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and several members of his family and close friends. The victims have been remembered by loved ones and the racing community as investigators work to determine the cause of the accident. The Cessna C550 business jet, which was returning to the airport in foggy, rainy weather, crashed close to the runway after taking off for Sarasota, Florida. The plane caught fire, killing everyone on board. According to a joint family statement and official confirmations, the victims included Greg Biffle and his wife, Cristina Grossu Biffle, their children Emma and Ryder Jack Biffle, and close friends Dennis Dutton and his son Jack Dutton. NASCAR haulier driver and friend Craig Wadsworth was also on board. The family described the losses as 'immeasurable' and asked for privacy and compassion as they begin to grieve and honor their loved ones' memories. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the cause of the crash. Flight tracking data shows the aircraft made an abrupt turn back toward the airport shortly after takeoff, with limited altitude gain. The NASCAR community has been paying tribute to Biffle, with many referring to him as a 'beloved' figure both on and off the track. Members of Congress have also joined in grieving the deaths of Biffle and the others. Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina praised Biffle's kindness and generosity, citing his use of a personal helicopter to rescue victims and provide aid after a devastating hurricane in Western North Carolina.
