In a significant move, Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the appointment of Field Marshal Asim Munir as the country's first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) for a five-year term. This decision follows the passage of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which aimed to ensure unity of command and speed up decision-making in critical situations.
The new position of CDF replaces the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), which has been abolished. Field Marshal Munir was initially appointed as the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) in November 2022 for a three-year term, which was later extended by five years in 2024.
The appointment of Munir as CDF comes after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif forwarded a summary recommending his name for the position. The move has been seen as a significant step towards strengthening Pakistan's military leadership.
President Zardari has extended his best wishes to Munir on his appointment and has also approved a two-year extension in service for Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu, Chief of Air Staff, effective from March 19, 2026.
The formal notification of Munir's appointment as CDF has ended speculation over a delay in the appointment, which had been pending since November 27, when former CJCSC General Sahir Shamshad Mirza retired.
