Pentagon Unveils Sweeping Military Overhaul: Reducing Generals and Consolidating Commands
If adopted, the proposal would mark one of the most significant changes at the military's top ranks in decades. | World News
The US military is set for a major shake-up, with Pentagon officials working on a plan to reorganize the top ranks of the armed forces. The proposal, requested by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, aims to reduce the number of four-star generals and consolidate some international command centers under a new organization, US International Command.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the plan would mark one of the most significant changes in decades. The US Joint Chiefs Chairman is expected to present the plan to Hegseth in the coming days.
The proposed changes would involve reducing the prominence of US Central Command, US European Command, and US Africa Command, and placing them under the control of the new organization. Additionally, the number of generals and admirals reporting directly to Hegseth would be cut.
For the plan to take effect, it would need to be approved by both Hegseth and US President Donald Trump. The proposal is the latest in a series of major shake-ups at the Pentagon under Trump's administration, which has already fired several senior officers this year.
In May, Hegseth ordered a 20% reduction in the number of active-duty four-star generals and admirals. The Trump administration's national security strategy, released in early December, marked a significant departure from previous US policy, emphasizing 'America First' in all its actions.
