A massive power outage in San Francisco has left residents without electricity for over 48 hours, with the Muni subway service still severely disrupted. State Senator Scott Wiener has voiced his frustration with PG&E, stating that the outage is 'outrageous and unacceptable.' The Muni subway service remains suspended between the Embarcadero and Castro stations, with normal service only available on the K, L, and M lines to the west of Castro. Meanwhile, buses and shuttle trains have been taking people downtown. Senator Wiener has announced plans to introduce legislation that would allow San Francisco to break away from PG&E and create a public utility. He argues that the company's size and prioritization of shareholder interests over public welfare have led to the current situation. PG&E CEO Sumeet Singh acknowledged customers' frustration and assured that the company is working around the clock to restore power. Singh estimated that 96% of affected customers would have their power back by 2 pm on Monday and promised to expedite claims for lost food and merchandise. This incident has sparked calls for accountability and reform in the power grid, with Senator Wiener emphasizing the need for a more reliable and community-focused approach to energy distribution.
