Saudi Arabia's northern regions experienced a rare and stunning weather phenomenon last Thursday, with snowfall reported in the mountainous areas of Tabuk and Hail, particularly around Jabal Al Lawz near the Jordanian border. The unusual weather event has brought joy to the desert nation, known for its scorching heat, as residents and tourists alike took to social media to share videos and photos of the snow-covered landscape. According to reports, temperatures in various parts of the country, including Tabuk, Turaif, Qurayyat, Dawadmi, and Taif, plummeted to as low as 2 degrees Celsius, while Sakaka and Hail recorded temperatures of around 3 degrees. The cold conditions are expected to persist in the coming days, with the Saudi National Centre of Meteorology warning of a sharp dip in temperatures and the possibility of snowfall in the highlands. Meteorologists attribute the unusual weather to a deep low-pressure system sweeping across parts of the Middle East, resulting in heavy rain, cold air, and snowfall in areas not typically associated with such weather. However, Saudi astronomer Mohammed bin Reddah Al Thaqafi notes that snowfall in northern Saudi Arabia occurs periodically each winter, although the exact timing is not fixed due to shifting climatic and atmospheric conditions. The rare snowfall has brought a welcome respite from the usual desert heat, with residents and tourists alike taking to the snow-covered dunes to enjoy the winter wonderland. As the region continues to experience erratic weather, with Dubai recently experiencing heavy rains and flooding, the snowfall in Saudi Arabia has brought a sense of joy and wonder to the desert nation.
