Seattle-area Floodwaters Claim First Victim as Region Braces for New Storms
A driver is found dead in a submerged car near Seattle after a week of heavy rain and flooding
A 33-year-old man driving past warning signs was found dead in a submerged car near Seattle, marking the first reported fatality in a week of intense rain and flooding in the region. The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office reported that rescue swimmers discovered the submerged vehicle in about 6 feet of water in a ditch northeast of Seattle.
Rescue efforts were hindered by the rapid rise of floodwaters, which caught many residents off guard. Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Jamal Beckham shared harrowing accounts of people stranded on their vehicles or trying to drive through water. 'They did not understand how rapidly the water rises,' Beckham said.
As the region struggles to recover from the devastating floods, a new storm system is expected to bring heavy rain, snow, and high winds to much of the Northwest over the next couple of days. Residents near a breached levee in King County were forced to evacuate, with authorities urging them to leave immediately.
In Pacific, a city about 20 miles south of Seattle, police issued a desperate plea for residents to evacuate the area near the White River, citing a 'flash flood warning' issued by the National Weather Service. The city's police department called for volunteers to help fill sandbags and repair the levee.
The levee breaches have left hundreds of residents displaced, with about 220 homes affected in Pacific. Public works officials are working to clear the water and repair the levee, while authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide aid to those affected.
