In a massive show of defiance, thousands of Slovaks took to the streets across the country on Tuesday to decry the government's latest assault on the rule of law. The protests, which drew crowds in nine cities, including the capital Bratislava, were sparked by the Prime Minister Robert Fico's administration pushing through parliament a series of legislative changes that critics claim dismantle critical safeguards against corruption. According to opposition leaders, the new laws undermine the whistleblower protection agency and alter the way the state handles witness testimony, effectively gutting the country's ability to combat organized crime. In a fiery speech to the crowd, Progressive Slovakia's leader Michal Simecka condemned the government's actions, saying: 'They took a chainsaw to the rule of law.' The protests come as Fico's government has faced growing scrutiny from the European Commission over its handling of EU laws and its apparent drift towards Russia. The administration has also been accused of weakening the country's financial crime laws and revamping the public broadcaster to serve its own interests. The rally on Tuesday was one of the largest since February, when tens of thousands of Slovaks took to the streets to protest what they saw as a foreign policy shift towards Russia. As the government continues to push through its agenda, Slovaks are making it clear that they will not stand idly by as their country's democratic institutions are eroded.
