Texas Man Trapped in Mexico Prison After Unintentional Border Crossing
Texas oil worker Caden Hawkins detained in a violent Mexican prison after accidentally crossing the border with a legally owned firearm.
A 23-year-old oil field worker from Texas has spent nine months in a notorious Mexican prison after unknowingly driving across the border. Caden Hawkins, from Hallsville, Texas, was arrested on March 2 in Juárez for carrying a legally owned pistol and ammunition in his vehicle.
According to his family, Hawkins was following GPS directions home from a job when he accidentally crossed into Mexico at the Columbus, New Mexico, port of entry. His mother, April Thomas, described the incident, saying her son became confused by the route and realized too late that he was approaching an international crossing.
Hawkins recorded part of the encounter on his phone before being taken into custody. Mexican authorities charged him with weapons offenses, but his family claims he was unaware of the border crossing and had the right to possess the firearm and ammunition in Texas.
The months-long detention has taken a toll on Hawkins' family, with his sister, Haley Nicole Hawkins, saying it has been devastating to hear her brother sounding distraught on the phone. Texas State Rep. Jay Dean has accused the Mexican authorities of treating Hawkins as a 'cash asset' and extorting his family for over $1,000 a week to provide basic necessities like hot water and toilet paper.
Hawkins' family is now pleading for federal intervention to secure his release from the Cereso Estatal No. 3 prison in Juárez, which is known for its violence, gang control, and corruption.
