A man convicted of attempting to assassinate former US President Donald Trump on a Florida golf course in 2024 has asked for an attorney to represent him during sentencing. Ryan Routh, 59, was found guilty of attempting to kill a presidential candidate and several firearm-related charges in September. The sentencing hearing has been rescheduled from this week to early February. During the trial, Routh tried to represent himself but was granted an attorney after two hearings in July. However, he has now requested a lawyer to represent him during the sentencing and appeal phases. In a bizarre motion, Routh offered to trade his life for a prisoner swap with inmates wrongly held in other countries and also extended an offer to Trump to 'take out his frustrations on my face.' Routh's actions led to chaos in the courtroom, with him attempting to stab himself with a pen and officers dragging him out. A Secret Service agent had opened fire, causing Routh to drop his rifle and flee without firing a shot. The agent had spotted Routh before Trump came into view, and he had aimed his rifle at the agent. US District Judge Aileen Cannon, nominated by Trump in 2020, granted Routh's request for an attorney, citing the importance of legal representation. Despite her disapproval of Routh's 'disrespectful charade,' she decided to err on the side of caution. Routh's former defense attorneys will continue to serve as standby counsel during the sentencing and appeal phases.
