Trump Ramps Up Venezuela Pressure with Sweeping Blockade of Sanctioned Oil Tankers
President Donald Trump said he was ordering a “TOTAL AND COMPLETE BLOCKADE OF ALL SANCTIONED OIL TANKERS” going into and leaving Venezuela.
In a significant escalation of tensions, US President Donald Trump has ordered a complete blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. This move comes as the US military presence in the region intensifies, with Trump vowing to impose a 'shock' on the Venezuelan regime.
The blockade, which Trump described as the 'largest Armada ever assembled in the History of South America,' aims to choke off the regime's access to oil revenue, which the US claims is being used to finance illicit activities such as drug trafficking and human rights abuses.
The US has designated the regime of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as a 'FOREIGN TERRORIST ORGANIZATION,' accusing it of stealing oil assets from the US and using them to fund its activities.
The move follows the seizure of a sanctioned oil tanker off Venezuela's coast last week, which led to an armada of four supertankers reversing course. The Pentagon has also conducted airstrikes against suspected drug-trafficking vessels in the region, killing dozens.
The Maduro government has condemned the US actions as a 'grab' for Venezuela's oil reserves, the largest in the world. The country's economy has been strained since the US tightened oil-trading restrictions earlier this year, with the government's supply of dollars falling 30% and inflation expected to top 400% by year's end.
State oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA, or PDVSA, works with international partners, including Chevron Corp., to drill in various parts of the country. However, Chevron has lowered the price of Venezuelan crude offered to US refiners following the seizure of the oil tanker.
Venezuelan President Maduro has called on his citizens to unite against US threats and has deployed troops, ships, aircraft, and drones to the border with Colombia. The White House has indicated that Trump's motivations for his actions in Venezuela revolve around pressuring Maduro to surrender.
