Trump to Honor Fallen Iowa National Guard Members in Dignified Transfer Ceremony
Trump will travel to Delaware for return of National Guard members killed in Syria, White House says
President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend a solemn dignified transfer ceremony at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Wednesday to honor the remains of two Iowa National Guard members killed in a deadly attack in Syria. Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, 25, of Des Moines, and Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, 29, of Marshalltown, lost their lives in the attack, which has raised questions about the rapprochement between the US and Syria. The two guardsmen were part of the 1st Squadron, 113th Cavalry Regiment, and a US civilian interpreter was also killed in the attack.
The dignified transfer ceremony is a tradition that honors fallen US service members, where transfer cases draped with the American flag are carried from the military aircraft to a mortuary facility at the base. Trump has previously described witnessing this ceremony as 'the toughest thing I have to do' as president.
The Iowa National Guard is mourning the loss of the two heroes, who were remembered for their dedication, bravery, and commitment to their duties. Sgt. Howard's stepfather described him as a loving husband and an 'amazing man of faith,' while fellow guardsmen remembered Sgt. Torres-Tovar as a 'very positive' person who always put others first.
The attack has sparked concerns about the US military presence in Syria, where hundreds of US troops are deployed as part of a coalition fighting the Islamic State group. Trump has vowed retaliation and has maintained confidence in the leadership of interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. Three other members of the Iowa National Guard were injured in the attack, with two in stable condition and the other in good condition.
