The United States has received its strongest trade proposal yet from India, according to US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Greer made the statement during a discussion on the country's efforts to expand its export markets, particularly for agricultural products. A US delegation is currently in India, engaged in talks on key trade issues, including resistance from India to certain row crops and meats.
While India is proving to be a 'tough nut to crack,' Greer acknowledged the country's 'forward-leaning' approach. The US is working to diversify its export destinations, with India emerging as a promising alternative market. Greer also highlighted the importance of maintaining trade ties with China, citing their growing demand for US products.
In a separate development, US Under Secretary of State Allison Hooker is on a five-day visit to India to strengthen strategic and economic cooperation. Hooker held discussions with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, focusing on turning the vision outlined by President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi into tangible outcomes.
An American negotiating team, led by Ambassador Rick Switzer, is in India for face-to-face deliberations on the proposed first-phase of the India-US bilateral trade agreement. The team will engage in a two-day formal negotiation with the Indian team, marking a significant step towards finalizing the agreement.
