In a direct response to a deadly attack on US personnel, the United States launched a massive airstrike operation dubbed Operation Hawkeye Strike against dozens of Islamic State (IS) targets in central Syria. The operation, confirmed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, targeted IS fighters, infrastructure, and weapons sites using a combination of F-15 Eagle fighter jets, A-10 Thunderbolt ground-attack aircraft, and AH-64 Apache helicopters. The airstrikes follow a devastating attack last weekend in the Syrian desert near Palmyra, which resulted in the deaths of two US Army soldiers and a US civilian interpreter, and wounded three other US soldiers. The attacker, identified as a member of Syria's security forces suspected of sympathizing with IS, was shot dead by US forces. President Donald Trump had vowed 'very serious retaliation' after the attack, and Defense Secretary Hegseth emphasized that the operation was a 'declaration of vengeance' against the terrorist group. The US military has identified the slain service members as Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar and Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, both members of the Iowa National Guard, and the civilian interpreter as Ayad Mansoor Sakat. The Syrian Interior Ministry has also confirmed the attacker's affiliation with Syria's security forces, highlighting the complexities of the conflict in the region. The US has stressed that the airstrikes are not the beginning of a war, but rather a targeted response to the IS attack. Additional strikes may follow, with the Pentagon cautioning that further operational details will not be disclosed at this time.
