Filmmaker Priyadarshan has spoken about the differences between Hindi and Malayalam cinema. In an interview with PTI, Priyadarshan said that Bollywood films stick to a tried-and-tested format, while Malayalam cinema focuses on content.
Priyadarshan highlighted the differences in the two industries, stating that Hindi films often follow a formulaic approach. He said, "Hindi cinema has one habit which has been there for years -- from those days (where stories were) about brothers (getting) separated and would reunite years later."
He added that the main issue with Malayalam cinema is the lack of budgets. "We have shoestring budgets, and our immediate competitor is Steven Spielberg," Priyadarshan said.
Priyadarshan also spoke about how he deals with interference from producers and starry tantrums on sets. He said that he always puts his foot down and asserts his vision, which has helped him maintain a good working relationship with actors like Govinda.
The director has been known for his successful comedic films in Hindi cinema, but admits that comedy is the most challenging genre to tackle. He said, "It is easy to make someone cry or feel sad but most difficult to make someone laugh and they should laugh from the heart."
Priyadarshan's upcoming Hindi film is the horror comedy Bhoot Bangla, starring Akshay Kumar and Tabu. He has also announced that his 100th film will be with Mohanlal.
