West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose yesterday took the reins, launching two major national highway projects worth ₹3,200 crore. Initially set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the ceremony was delayed due to thick fog in the Nadia district area. Modi's helicopter was unable to land, forcing him to return to the Kolkata airport and address the crowd virtually. Bose officially inaugurated the 66.7 km-long four-laning of the Barajaguli-Krishnanagar section of NH-34 in Nadia district, while laying the foundation stone for the four-laning of the Barasat-Barajaguli stretch of the highway in North 24 Parganas district. The projects aim to enhance connectivity between Kolkata and Siliguri, reducing travel time by approximately 2 hours and improving connections with other districts and neighboring countries. Modi expressed regret for missing the in-person event, citing the inclement weather. However, he emphasized the significance of the projects, stating they will boost economic growth and tourism in the region. The development will establish a vital connecting link between the state's capital and other districts, ensuring faster and smoother movement of vehicles.
