Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav has proposed a temporary ban on demolition work in the National Capital Region (NCR) between October and December, a period notorious for severe air pollution. The move aims to reduce the construction and demolition waste generated during this time, which can exacerbate pollution. During a high-level meeting with municipal bodies of Delhi and Sonepat, Yadav emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle air pollution in the region. He directed the agencies to work towards a 40% reduction in the air quality index over the next year and create infrastructure to handle construction and demolition waste within a 10 km radius of the site. The minister also highlighted the importance of improving the city's traffic management by removing illegal parking and encroachments from identified hotspots. A plan is being prepared to enable signal-free movement during peak hours and restrict vehicles below BS-IV standards on specific corridors. To address unplanned urban expansion, Yadav called for last-mile connectivity for residents of high-rise buildings to public transport hubs, promoting the use of public transport and reducing congestion. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has been asked to adopt a multi-faceted approach to eliminate traffic congestion and pollution hotspots. The minister also directed the fast-tracking of legacy waste dump site liquidation, removal of stray animals from roads, and analysis of industrial units' PNG production and consumption bills to assess the transition to clean fuel. These measures are aimed at improving the air quality in the NCR and enhancing the city's global image.
