China Takes WTO Route Against India's Tariff Hike on IT Products

China has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) against India's tariffs on information and communication technology (ICT) products and solar sector subsidies. The move is seen as a challenge to India's domestic economic policies, which Beijing claims violate WTO rules and unfairly benefit Indian industries. According to a statement from China's commerce ministry, India's tariffs on ICT products allegedly breach WTO principles, including national treatment, and constitute prohibited subsidies. China has urged India to honour its WTO commitments and adjust these measures promptly. This is the second WTO complaint filed by China against India this year, following a petition in October that alleged unfair subsidies for electric vehicles and batteries. While such notices are not uncommon, experts believe that the escalating tensions between the two nations could have significant implications for global trade.
