A 35-year-old Ghanaian national, who had entered India on a medical visa in June, was arrested in Meghalaya's West Jaiñtia Hills for allegedly attempting to cross into Bangladesh using a fake identity. Accused of travelling under a false name, William Addo Agyei, a resident of Kumasi in Ghana, had claimed to be Stanley Obayendo. During interrogation, Agyei revealed that he had applied for an extension of his visa but received no response from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO). With a valid visa expiring in September, he received an email directing him to report to the FRRO or the Banaswadi Police Station in Bengaluru. However, instead of complying, Agyei allegedly took help from a tout named Frank to facilitate his illegal movement into Bangladesh. The police have registered a case against Agyei for travelling under a fake identity and attempting to exfiltrate. The incident highlights the issue of individuals attempting to bypass immigration rules to enter neighboring countries illegally.
