Union Health Minister J P Nadda has urged for enhanced preparedness and response measures to combat the expected rise in influenza cases this season. Speaking at the two-day 'Chintan Shivir' on influenza preparedness, Nadda emphasized the need for coordinated efforts across sectors to contain the virus. The event, organized by the National Centre for Disease Control in collaboration with WHO India, brought together over 110 representatives from various ministries, departments, and institutions. Participants shared best practices and experiences, highlighting the importance of multi-sectoral engagement in addressing the public health challenge posed by influenza. The Union health ministry is closely monitoring seasonal influenza trends across states and union territories through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) network. Deliberations at the 'Chintan Shivir' stressed the need for a structured approach to preparedness review, including the development of a practical preparedness checklist to support readiness assessments and identify gaps. Experts warn that influenza continues to pose a significant threat to public health in India and globally, resulting in substantial morbidity and mortality, particularly among vulnerable populations. Nadda underlined the importance of timely information sharing, clarity of roles and responsibilities, and coordinated action across departments to effectively combat the virus.
