New Delhi, The Union Home Ministry has established two more empowered committees in West Bengal to process applications for Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act.
The state already had two such committees, but due to a large number of applications, the decision was made to set up two additional panels.
Each empowered committee will comprise an officer not below the rank of Deputy Secretary to the Government of India, an officer from the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau, and other officials nominated by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer, and the State Informatics Officer.
The committee will also include the Post Master General of West Bengal or a postal officer nominated by the Post Master General, as well as two invitees: a representative from the West Bengal government and a representative of the jurisdictional Divisional Railway Manager of Railways.
