A fresh wave of violence has hit the state of Manipur, with a gunfight breaking out at the border village of Torbung, which lies between Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, with officials confirming that security forces came under attack from unknown armed miscreants. At least one civilian was injured in the cross-firing, although their identity has yet to be confirmed. The village of Torbung has recently been home to internally displaced persons (IDPs) from 67 families, who were resettled under government orders. However, the situation took a turn for the worse when armed miscreants from the Churachandpur side allegedly launched an attack on the village at around 8:30 pm, prompting security forces to retaliate. The 20-minute gunfight has left villagers in a state of panic, with officials rushing in reinforcement teams from the state police and central security forces to restore order. The situation in Torbung remains tense, with the government struggling to contain the crisis that has plagued Manipur since May 3, 2023. The state has seen over 260 fatalities and more than 60,000 displaced individuals, prompting President's Rule to be imposed on February 13. Despite efforts by the government to resettle IDPs, recent developments have raised concerns about the restoration of peace in the region. A high-level meeting between BJP MLAs, including Kuki-Zo representatives, was held in the national capital on December 14, with the aim of finding a solution to the ongoing crisis. In a separate development, the Director General of Police (DGP) visited Churachandpur district on Tuesday, where he inaugurated a conference room and chaired a security review meeting with officers from the Manipur Police and other security forces. The DGP also met with representatives of various civil society organizations (CSOs) in the district to discuss the security situation and preparedness.
