Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the new Terminal 2 building of Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in Guwahati, Assam. The state-of-the-art terminal, designed to handle 13.1 million passengers annually, marks a significant milestone in the region's aviation development. Constructed at an estimated cost of ₹4,000 crore, the project's total budget stands at ₹5,000 crore, with ₹1,000 crore allocated for Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities. The new terminal, spread over 1,40,000 square metres, is inspired by Assam's rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. It is expected to transform Guwahati airport into a crucial aviation hub for the entire Northeast region. During the inauguration, PM Modi took a tour of the terminal and unveiled an 80-foot statue of Gopinath Bardoloi, the state's first chief minister, outside the airport. The prime minister has emphasized the importance of increased capacity, citing its potential to enhance 'Ease of Living,' boost commerce, and stimulate tourism in the region. On Sunday, PM Modi will pay floral tributes at the Shaheed Smarak Sthal, a memorial dedicated to the brave martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the historic Assam Movement. He will then attend the groundbreaking ceremony of the Ammonia-Urea Fertilizer Project in Namrup, Dibrugarh, which aims to meet the fertilizer needs of Assam and other states, promoting self-reliance and reducing imports.
