US President Donald Trump has left the door open for sending ground troops into Iran if necessary, just hours after Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth reassured that the US-Israeli strikes in Iran would not spiral into a prolonged regional conflict.

Trump told the New York Post that he would not rule out sending ground troops into Iran, saying 'probably don't need them', 'if they were necessary'. He also spoke to CNN, saying 'We haven't even started hitting them hard. The big wave hasn't even happened. The big one is coming soon.'

Hegseth had earlier addressed concerns that the US-Israeli strikes in Iran could lead to a prolonged regional conflict, saying 'This is not Iraq. This is not endless.'

The conflict has intensified into a wider war in the region, with Iran and its allied armed groups launching missiles at Israel, Arab states and US military targets in the Middle East. Four American troops have been killed in action, while over 500 deaths have been reported in Iran.

US officials have not offered any exit plan or signs that the conflict would end anytime soon, and the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has cast doubt on the future of the Islamic Republic and hurtled the region into broader instability.
