Social media platform X has taken swift action to address concerns over obscene imagery generated by its AI chatbot Grok, following a stern warning from the Indian government. According to sources, X blocked over 3,500 pieces of objectionable content and deleted over 600 accounts in a bid to comply with online content laws in the country. The move comes after the government gave X Corp, owned by Elon Musk, a deadline to file an action taken report on the issue. In response, X acknowledged its mistake and agreed to prevent the creation of explicit content on its platform. The government's warning was sparked by the ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) flagging serious failures in preventing sexually explicit content on X. Officials made it clear that the platform could lose its legal protection under Indian law if it failed to comply, and that other platforms would face similar consequences if their AI chatbots didn't adhere to the rules. In a significant shift in approach, the government has reclassified Grok as a content creator, rather than a neutral platform tool. As such, X must now take responsibility for the AI-generated content. India is not alone in objecting to Grok's content generation. Other countries, including Indonesia, the UK, France, and Malaysia, have also raised concerns about AI-generated explicit content. X's swift response to the government's warning suggests a willingness to address these concerns and prevent the spread of objectionable material on its platform.
