The 2026 FIFA World Cup has exploded into life, with some of the biggest names in football already making their mark. Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland have produced eye-catching performances, and Cristiano Ronaldo has now joined the party with a clinical display against Uzbekistan.
India football star Sandesh Jhingan spoke exclusively to Hindustan Times Digital about the tournament so far, sharing his thoughts on Argentina's impressive title defence, Messi's sensational start, Mbappe's continued World Cup brilliance, and the ongoing debate surrounding Ronaldo.
Jhingan praised Messi's longevity and consistency, saying it's 'incredible' to see him performing at such a high level at 39. He also highlighted Argentina's defensive solidity, crediting the team's coaching staff for adapting their tactics to suit their players.
The defender also weighed in on the criticism that Argentina relies too heavily on Messi, saying that the team's organisation and defensive discipline are just as important. He also praised Kylian Mbappe's World Cup record, saying he has all the credentials to be considered among the greatest players in World Cup history.
Jhingan also discussed the debate surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo's age and recent form, saying that it's up to the head coach to decide whether he's good enough to start. He also tipped Messi and Mbappe as the current favourites for the Golden Boot, and revealed that he'd put his money on Japan to go all the way in the tournament.
