The Atlanta Falcons have signed Tua Tagovailoa, but the decision to do so may have been influenced by the team's investment in Michael Penix Jr. The Falcons general manager, Ian Cunningham, stated that both quarterbacks will have a chance to compete for the starting role.

Penix, the 2024 first-round pick, is recovering from a torn ACL and is expected to miss at least the early portion of the 2026 season. This could give Tagovailoa an opportunity to establish himself as the starter if he performs well during training camp and the opening weeks of the season.

Tagovailoa arrives in Atlanta following a tumultuous stretch in Miami, where he suffered his fourth documented concussion and experienced declining production. The Dolphins released him, though they remain responsible for $54 million owed to him in 2026.

The Falcons' offseason additions have centered on players seeking a fresh start, including wide receiver Jahan Dotson. Dotson joins a Falcons receiving group that has undergone several changes, with Drake London remaining one of the primary targets.
