Mumbai: Jyothi Yarraji, India's top hurdler, may find it challenging to make it to the Commonwealth Games due to her ongoing injury recovery. Her coach, James Hillier, believes that the CWG might be a bit too tight for her.
Yarraji suffered an ACL tear on her right knee during training last year and underwent surgery in July. She returned to track training last month and is currently eyeing the Federation Cup in May for a possible competitive return.
Hillier stated that the Asian Games, where Yarraji won a silver medal in the last edition, is the priority for this season. He also mentioned that Yarraji might compete in some 100m races this year, a distance she has dabbled in before.
Yarraji had a positive 2025 season before her injury, winning the Asian Championships and another meet in Taiwan. Her coach is optimistic about her recovery and believes she will be back to her best by the end of the year.
Yarraji's injury is part of a recurring theme in Indian athletics, where several elite athletes have struggled with injuries over the past couple of years.
Hillier attributed the frequent injuries to various factors, including a lack of multi-sport background among Indian kids, younger athletes following coaches without question, and athletes pushing too hard, especially with strength-based exercises.
