Just a year ago, Lionel Messi was unsure if he'd feature in the FIFA World Cup. Fast-forward to Monday, and he's now just eight goals away from breaking Just Fontaine's record for most goals in a single World Cup.
Messi, 38, has already scored five goals in the tournament and is atop the Golden Boot standings. With Argentina guaranteed to play at least two more games, the possibility of him breaking the record is not out of reach.
Currently, the record for most goals in a single World Cup belongs to French legend Just Fontaine, who scored 13 goals in six matches during the 1958 edition.
Messi will look to continue his form as Argentina closes out their group-stage campaign against Jordan on Saturday, June 27. If they finish atop the group, they'll face the runner-up from Group H in the Round of 32.
