NASCAR driver Jesse Love suffered a major setback before the San Diego race, as officials handed him multiple penalties for a rules violation.
The Richard Childress Racing driver will start from the back of the field and serve an in-race penalty due to the lug nuts on his No. 2 Chevrolet not meeting the minimum size requirements.
Love's team will also lose their pit stall selection privilege for the next race weekend at Sonoma Raceway, adding to the consequences.
The penalties put Love in a difficult position, forcing his crew chief to rethink race strategy from the opening laps.
As the reigning series champion, Love sits second in the championship standings and trails series leader Justin Allgaier by 250 points.
