Mumbai: Jannik Sinner's French Open campaign came to an abrupt end at the hands of Juan Manuel Cerundolo, who pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament so far.
Cerundolo, the world No.56 from Argentina, defeated Sinner 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 in a second-round match that lasted three hours and nine minutes.
The Italian, a four-time Grand Slam champion, was in control for a majority of the match, leading 5-1 in the third set before the heatwave in Paris got the better of him.
He had to go off court for treatment, but was a pale shadow of himself when he returned, allowing Cerundolo to win 18 of the last 20 games and secure passage into the third round.
Cerundolo attributed his win to a bit of luck and expressed sympathy for Sinner, who had played well in the first two sets.
The heat in Paris has been a major talking point in the first few days of Roland Garros, with the French capital experiencing a 'heat dome' due to a high-pressure system.
