India has condemned the killing of a Serbian peacekeeper serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and called for a thorough investigation into the attack.
The peacekeeper was killed and two others injured in a shelling of a UN base near Marjayoun, which occurred during an exchange of fire between Israeli troops and Hezbollah forces.
India, a major contributor to UNIFIL, has repeatedly condemned attacks on UN peacekeepers and called for their safety and security to be ensured.
The Indian mission to the UN in New York also issued a statement condemning the attack and paying tribute to the fallen peacekeeper, calling for an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident.
The death of the Serbian peacekeeper brings the total number of UNIFIL personnel killed during hostilities since March to seven.
