The Union home ministry has introduced changes to the Immigration and Foreigners Rules 2025, requiring foreigners in India on visas for 180 days or less to register themselves before the expiry of the said period if they wish to stay beyond the visa period.
The new provision, notified on Monday, replaces the previous rule that required registration within 14 days after the expiry of 180 days of arrival in India.
Foreigners on a visa for over 180 days, who wish to stay in India beyond that period, will now have to register anytime before the expiry of 180 days, with registration only granted in emergent circumstances.
The new rule provides relief to children whose one or both parents are foreigners, allowing them to retain Indian citizenship if either parent is an Indian citizen.
The notification also revises provisions relating to reporting requirements and administrative procedures for hospitals, nursing homes, and other medical institutions providing medical and lodging facilities.
