Bungie has confirmed that Destiny 2 will effectively enter maintenance mode after its final major live-service update launches on June 9, 2026. The studio has announced that active development on Destiny 2 is winding down following 'The Final Shape' era, and its focus is now shifting towards future projects, including its upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon.

In a statement titled 'Every End is a New Beginning', Bungie explained its decision, stating that it has been an honor to explore the Destiny universe with the community for almost twelve years. The studio confirmed that June 9, 2026, will bring the final live-service content update for Destiny 2, and that it will remain playable moving forward.

Bungie stressed that though active development may be concluding, the game will ensure that Destiny 2 remains playable, just as the original Destiny is today. The studio also reiterated that its focus is moving towards future games and broader incubation projects, and that Destiny 3 remains unconfirmed.

The announcement included several key additions, including the Monument of Triumph event, the return of Sparrow Racing League, and a major overhaul for raids and dungeons. Bungie also confirmed the Director will once again become the main navigation hub, and that Portal systems are being streamlined to reduce 'choice paralysis' and improve accessibility for returning players.

The final update also includes new subclass aspects, new grenades, exotic armor changes, Crucible game modes, and Gambit rewards refreshes. Bungie teased additional sandbox surprises in future developer blogs leading into launch. Seasonal events will be retired, with rewards moving into the Monument of Triumph system.

The announcement ended with a lengthy thank-you message directed at the Destiny community, thanking them for joining them on this journey throughout the Sol system.
