Oslo, Norway - World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen has announced that he's stepping back from classical chess, paving the way for a new generation of players to challenge for the top spot.

Carlsen, who has held the undisputed world title for over a decade, says he's now focusing on rapid and blitz chess, where he derives greater joy and satisfaction.

Despite his dominance in classical chess, Carlsen believes that the current crop of players must prove themselves in the classical format before questioning his priorities.

Carlsen is currently chasing a record-extending eighth title at Norway Chess, but he's made it clear that he's not chasing records anymore, having already achieved a remarkable level of success.

He's also backing innovations aimed at making chess more entertaining, such as Armageddon tie-breakers, which add drama and reduce the monotony of draws.
